Senior Concept Artist

At Moon Beast Productions, we’re expanding our talented team to pioneer the next wave of genre-defining ARPGs. We are seeking a world-class Senior Concept Artist who will be instrumental in visualizing and defining the aesthetic of our game. You will be responsible for creating detailed concept art for the production of hero characters, NPCs, monsters, and immersive game environments, as well as key art for promotional purposes.

As a key member of our Art Department, you will bring our diverse fantasy world to life. From sunlit meadows to foreboding swamps, haunted forests, and ancient cursed ruins, this role is perfect for a visionary artist who is passionate about fantasy world-building. Our team is a close-knit collective that is deeply passionate about ARPGs, and we’re excited to integrate a creative professional eager to innovate alongside us!

What you’ll do

  • Produce high-quality key art for marketing and game promotion, ensuring consistency with the game’s visual and thematic goals

  • Collaborate with the Art Director and other team members to maintain a cohesive aesthetic across all visual elements of the game

  • Work with the rest of the art team to translate narrative and design concepts into game art, enhancing the depth and cohesion of the whole game

  • Create cohesive and thourough designs for game characters, monsters, props, and environments that serve the needs of 3D and texture artists who build the game assets

Essential hard skills
  • Proven track record as a Concept Artist in the gaming industry, with a robust portfolio showcasing a range of fantasy characters, costumes, monsters, and environments

  • Strong artistic skills, including a deep understanding of color theory, composition, and visual storytelling

  • Proficiency in digital painting and drawing tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio, Procreate, or similar software

  • Demonstrated ability to create clear model sheets with callouts, material references, and detail views

  • Ability to design inside the constraints of modular, procedural systems. For example, character costumes with many interchangeable elements and game environments that are procedurally generated out of many small components

  • Experience with Unity game engine, and Perforce (or other source control, and ability to learn Perforce). We are a small distributed team with no dedicated IT support so we’re looking for everyone to have a baseline ability with our key development applications

Essential soft skills
  • Comfortable and productive in a remote work environment, with excellent time-management skills and a proactive attitude

  • Self-motivated and committed to excellence for yourself and the game

  • Comfortable with iteration, finding the fun, and forging an unexplored path

  • Committed to collaboration, constructive feedback, and supportive teamwork

  • Are an earnest problem solver and a solution-bringer

  • Creative thinker with a keen eye for detail and passion for immersive, narrative-driven art

You’re an even better fit if you
  • Have a passion and love for ARPGs, fantasy characters, settings, and lore

  • Love various fantasy flavors including classic “D&D”, old fairy tales, and dark gothic

  • Excited to reinterpret historical costumes, architecture and mythological creatures

  • Are experienced and familiar with the particular constraints of concepting art for isometric ARPGs or similar games

What we offer
  • Competitive compensation and equity

  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, fully paid for the employee and their family

  • 401(k) with 100% employer matching up to 6% of salary

Working at Moon Beast

Moon Beast was formed by people with deep connections to the most foundational and influential ARPGs of the past to make even better games for current and future generations of players. There is enormous untapped potential in the ARPG genre. Our unique approach to design and development is a recipe we’ve honed over the years. It’s a mix of proven theory and gut instinct. It combines careful thinking and “throw it in and see what works.”

We plan, iterate, refine, and lean into what’s fun. We listen to the community, watch the players, and strive to give them even better than they hope for.

We love what we do, and there’s nothing we’d rather be doing. Our collective has found and will continue to find each other because of our passion for the work and creativity it takes to make world-class ARPGs.

We are committed to remote-first work (within 3 timezones of PST) and also provide the option to co-work in regions with multiple team members. Currently, we have a small office in San Mateo, CA, for folks living in the Bay Area.
